The Cost of Repairing a Damaged Vehicle

Collisions occur when 2 objects bump into each other. So if two cars run into each other or if a car smashes into a tree it is considered a collision. It can be a very unpleasant experience overall, emotionally and physically.

According to statistics the majority of accidents do not result in any serious physical trauma or injury. Those resulting in fatalities will normally mean the vehicle is written off, either the cost of repair in relation to the value of the vehicle isn’t justified or the vehicle is so deformed that it cannot be repaired to a safe factory recommended standard.

The cost of the repairs depends on many factors, an experienced panel beater should be able to assess the damage and give an informed detailed estimate for the required repairs on the spot or within 30 minutes if parts prices need to be obtained from suppliers. The most common place a vehicle is damaged is the front end or rear bumper. These collisions are normally low speed impacts. Luckily car manufacturers take this into account when designing their cars, so the front and back bumpers are made to absorb the collision impact reducing shock and damage to the vehicles occupants, pedestrians and costly mechanical components such as the engine, transmission, brakes and suspension.

The front and rear bumpers, door, and even side panels are removed with ease. They are held on with bolts and screws. Sometimes the extent of the damage is only a scratch on the surface, or paint has been chipped off, here the collision repairman will simply remove surrounding parts such as a door handle, mould or door lock and the spray painter or auto re-finisher will sand down, fill -in and re-spray the affected area. This could take as little as a few hours work. In the case of a seriously damaged door, bumper or panel, the cost in labour of repairing the part may exceed the cost of replacing it therefore the more cost effective option is to source another replacement part.

On occasion the desired part could have a procurement lead time of weeks or months, or the part may not be available at all, should this be the case the decision may be made to repair a badly damaged car part. An experienced panel beater will ensure that the repair is performed to a very high quality and safety standard. This forward thinking will speed up vehicle turnaround time, ensuring the customer has their vehicle returned to them in the shortest time possible minimising vehicle down time particularly important if the customers vehicle is a company car.

Raceway Insurance: Race Car Driver, Vehicle and Animal Racetracks

There is no doubt that racing – whether by auto, motorcycle, truck or other vehicle or animal – is a very hazardous sport. It is for this reason that insurance coverage is so important for the driver and track owner or sponsor.

Racing Car Driver Insurance

Known in the industry as AD&D Coverage, this insurance is designed specifically for the racing car drivers. Providing accident and health coverage for competing drivers, the companies that write this type of indemnity are most likely in the market for other sporting industries. In regard to racing car drivers, disability limits differ according to each individual insurer.

Vehicle Racetrack Insurance

If you have ever been part of the enthusiastic audience viewing a car, motorcycle or any other recreational vehicle race, you can well understand that there are significant risks to safety. Much like any highly populated sports event, there is the issues related to crowd control and bleacher hazards. In regard to third-party injury claims, vehicle racetrack insurance covers the owners and/or sponsors behind the event.

Specific scenarios in which a lawsuit may be initiated by an injured spectator include:

• When a grandstand or bleacher folds and falls

• When a member of the crowd is impacted by a participating car collision or accident

• When someone watching a practice session or actual race is hurt by debris hurled as a result of an accident

This particular coverage does not include protection for owners of vehicles or sports car drivers. Refer back to the above summary about racing car driver insurance for more on the topic.

Animal Racetrack Insurance

Prime examples of animal racetrack participants are horses and greyhounds, but other animals are also included. Significant risks include exposure to hay and any other combustible matter that is general part and parcel of the property. On the other hand of course, there is also the potential of damage to the involved animals as well as the possibility of damages caused by the animals to consider. The related liability factors are very much the same as any other sporting event. However, the fact that animals and employees and spectators are so close to each other, places an underscored hazard risk at the racetrack.

Then again, many of the racetracks have ongoing betting activity which clearly leaves exposure to criminal activity, defined by the indemnity industry as dishonesty exposure. When eateries are also a part of the framework, the related restaurant risk exposure and liquor liability exposure go hand in hand.

First Automobile Works (FAW) – China’s Aggressive Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Manufacturer – Part 1

China FAW Group Corporation is currently billed as the number one automobile maker in China, and is also one of the oldest in the industry, dating back to 1953. FAW Group, or more commonly know as simply FAW, has a wide-ranging base of products, from passenger cars, mini (utility) vehicles, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and pickup trucks, to commercial trucks, buses and coaches.

FAW also makes components and parts such as wheel rims, truck axles, engine parts and pumps. In recent years, FAW also entered several joint ventures with Toyota and other manufacturers in other countries such as Russia. In fact, its joint venture with Toyota became the reason for the existence of the Toyota Prius. Toyota also produced the Vios and Corolla models through a partnership with FAW’s Tianjin unit. Aside from that, FAW also worked with Volkswagen AG and came up with a high-tech production facility that produces large numbers of cars every year. The company has now grown to become the China FAW Group Corporation from its humble beginnings as a truck maker, and from 1953 up to the present, it has remained at the forefront of China’s car industry. Until now, it maintains its truck market but has expanded and is offering high-quality cars to other markets as well.

Another market that First Automobile Works is currently tapping is the clean car market. The industry has yet to grow, but First Automobile Works is working hard to achieve its goals in the clean car segment. Aside from its continuous efforts in improving sales and production of its current market offerings, the company is also paying attention to the production and development of hybrid cars.

FAW and Toyota Collaboration

One of the most popular and significant advancements in the clean car industry is the Toyota Prius, a heavily marketed hybrid car produced by Toyota in collaboration with FAW. Produced a few years back, the Prius was released in China after Toyota and FAW entered a 50-50 partnership venture. The Prius is a 1.5L vehicle and consumes 40.5% less fuel than the 1.6L gasoline vehicle Toyota Corolla. Recently Toyota announced that its latest generation Toyota Prius will start selling in China in 2010. Despite the Prius’ relatively high price tag (up to 280,000 yuan or US$41,000,) Toyota has reason to be optimistic with expected consumer incentives by China’s central government to spur sales of clean cars including electric and hybrids. China’s automobile industry is very ripe for the introduction of hybrid cars. With the Chinese government wholly supportive and with the subsidies being offered to taxi fleets as well as tax benefits offered to consumers who patronize clean cars, car manufacturers such as FAW and Toyota recognize that there is no better time to introduce hybrid cars to the Chinese market than now. These efforts to further the development of clean cars aim to reduce pollution and relieve oil shortage problems being experienced not just in China but all over the world. Nonetheless, the Toyota and FAW partnership is also planning to release about 400,000 compact, medium, and high-end buses and sedans by the year 2010 to the Chinese market.

More hybrid cars are being planned for release under FAW brand. In fact, the entire FAW Group is expected to release around 1,600 hybrid cars before the year 2012 ends. During the same timeframe, the company is hoping to produce 800 hybrid buses. Most of the hybrid cars are planned to have hybrid engine technologies sourced from Japan’s top car makers. Its hybrid vehicle products produced together with Toyota are expected to hit the global market since Toyota aims to distribute said products globally. These upcoming clean cars will be produced at a special hybrid car facility. FAW has also shown its determination to see the said project through to the end by increasing its investments. There is surely a lot to wait for from FAW.

We’ll look at FAW’s work in hybrid buses in Part 2.
